What is Topical Dutasteride and What is it Used For?

Topical Dutasteride is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It works by reducing the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the scalp, the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles and causing hair thinning.

Dutasteride is a more potent alternative to Finasteride, inhibiting both type I and type II 5-alpha-reductase enzymes, which convert testosterone to DHT.

How Does Topical Dutasteride Work?

By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, Topical Dutasteride:

  • Slows down hair thinning

  • Stimulates regrowth of existing hair

  • Prevents further hair loss

How to Use Topical Dutasteride

  • Apply 1 ml to the scalp once daily or as directed by your healthcare provider.

  • Gently massage into the affected areas of the scalp.

  • Avoid washing or rinsing your scalp for at least 4 hours after applying the solution.

How Effective is Topical Dutasteride?

Results may start becoming visible after 3 to 6 months of regular use. Full benefits are often seen after 12 months of consistent application.

Possible Side Effects

  • Mild scalp irritation or itching

  • Redness at the application site

  • Rare systemic side effects such as decreased libido

Important Considerations

  • Pregnancy warning: Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle topical Finasteride as it may harm an unborn baby.

  • Regular check-ups: Your healthcare provider may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

  • Missed dose: If you forget to apply a dose, do not double the next one. Simply continue with your regular application schedule.
